How to Choose a Location for Your Wedding Photos

Wedding photographs are the best way to capture the big day, other than one’s memory alone. For this reason, it’s important for couples to choose the ideal spot for these photos. Location of the venue can have much to do with this decision. Selecting the proper beautiful location can help to capture these loving moments with ease.

Stay Close

When possible, choose a location that is not far from the ceremony. Transportation can eat up time better spent taking portraits. If you do plan to travel for your photos, consider traffic in the area. You won’t want to miss the lighting of the day because you’re stuck on the highway.

Personality

A wedding should focus mainly on the bride and groom, and this should be reflected in the photos. Choose a location that fits both personalities. When family and friends see your pictures, they should think, “That is so them!” Stay true to yourself.

Stick With the Theme

Share your theme with your photographer and discuss ideas based off location settings. For example, if you chose a classic wedding, the surrounding architecture shouldn’t be modern. Make sure your style fits with the vision of your photographer, and don’t be afraid to speak up.

Utilize Natural Lighting

Some professional photographers refuse to shoot in anything other than natural lighting. Choose a brightly lit location that offers ample natural light. It’s best to shoot in the early morning or evening to avoid harsh shadows. When shooting indoors, position yourself near a large window.

Don’t Be Distracted

The location is crucial for your wedding photos, but don’t let it distract from the main subject – you! Check the photos regularly throughout the shoot. If your eye draws more to the scenery, there is too much emphasis on the location.

Choose a Quiet Place

Avoid choosing crowded locations, as this may make the photographs appear less intimate. For the best backdrops for a portrait photo, consider the following locations:

  • Beaches
  • Grassy fields
  • Woodland areas
  • A friend or family’s property
  • Private venues, such as Blaine Stone Lodge
